Common Applications
This engine is a popular choice for sportfishing boats, trawlers, and light commercial workboats. Because the ‘A’ designation indicates an Aftercooled (or intercooled) setup, it provides denser air to the cylinders, allowing for higher power output and better fuel efficiency than naturally aspirated or simply turbocharged versions.
Operational Tips & Maintenance
- Cooling Systems: Older models may have barely adequate cooling systems if run at the highest RPMs for extended periods. Regular maintenance of the heat exchangers, raw water pumps, and aftercoolers is crucial.
- Prop Selection: These motors must be able to reach their rated RPMs plus a slight margin around 2700RPM at Wide Open Throttle (WOT) when fully loaded. Being “over-propped” (where the engine cannot reach its maximum rated RPM) can lead to early engine wear or failure.
